It Isn't Over

I thought that this dream of mine was over. Well, at least for now...and I was okay with that. I had finally accepted the fact that law school would not be happening. A friend of mine, one who has played a valuable role in my journey to law school, perfectly summed up my experience -- It's like sprinting full speed ahead, and then hitting a brick wall.

Yep, that's it in a nutshell.

In my last "law school saga" post, I wrote about retaking the LSAT in September, applying to a new batch of law schools, and beginning my legal studies next fall. Then, one night while Keith and I were on a date, a switch was flipped. We were discussing our future, and how retaking the LSAT/applying to new schools guarantees that our family will be moving again (for the sixth time in 4 years) and potentially to a place without any family, friends, or support. Keith works anywhere from 50-80 hours a week, and if we've no family or friends, then our children will be raised by strangers.

And it was at that moment I realized that I can't do that to them. Gavin and Arabella come first. As much as I know with all of my heart that becoming a lawyer is what I'm meant to do, I also know that now isn't the time. I tried, and it didn't work out.

My next step is going to be to finish my Master's. I've changed my major to Human Services Counseling with a Criminal Justice cognate, and I'll go from there. If I end up going to law school later in life, that would be incredible. If not, then I have to believe that that's what is best for myself and for my family.

So, that's it, right? Everything is figured out.

Wrong.

So, so wrong.

You see, I decided all of the above in July. I had accepted my current scenario, but never stopped thinking about law school. One night, I decided to look for law programs offered in an online format. I found a few of those, but none that were accredited by the American Bar Association. No accreditation = no bar exam = no way to become a practicing attorney. Then, I found a law school in California that is 100% online, but you're only allowed to take the California bar. That option didn't work either.

Then, I hit the jackpot.

I found a brand new program that begins in January 2015 at William Mitchell College of Law. It's called the Hybrid Program and would allow me to complete each semester's work online. (!!!!!) I would have to visit their campus in St. Paul, Minnesota 9 times over four years for a Capstone week at the end of each semester, as well as at the beginning of 1L. This program is accredited, which means I can take the bar and become a practicing attorney, and is a perfect fit for me!

Y'all.

Am I dreaming?

It feels like a dream.

It feels like the game was over, and then straight out of left field, I've been given one. more. chance. I've already applied, and am just praying my little heart out that I am accepted. I know that God has this under control, and if I'm not accepted now, then He has something better in store. However, I have a good feeling about this. God closed the door for me at Charleston Law, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if the heartbreak and confusion led me to William Mitchell.

If you're reading this and feeling hopeless, loss, or defeated, I want you to know that it's not over until He says that it's over. Never give up. Never give in. Turn that frown upside down. Keep fighting. You never know what your future holds.

For me, I hope that the future is a lovely school in Minnesota. :)

A Big, Fat Curve Ball

I can't believe that I am about to write this post. Where do I even begin...

As my last post stated, I have been accepted to law school. I applied to 9 schools, and was accepted at 4, wait listed at 3, and rejected at 2. I accepted an enrollment offer and paid the first seat deposit at the Charleston School of Law. My family and I relocated back in October 2013 to North Carolina, and made the decision to move back to our house in Charleston, SC after being accepted at Charleston Law.

Everything seemed perfect. I thought I had finally done it. I'd finally taken the awful LSAT, survived the law school application process, and was on my way to beginning my legal career.

And then I read an article with the headline "Charleston School of Law founders withdrew $25 million in profits leaving school on shaky financial ground."

....um, what?!?!

Basically, to make a long story short...

Two of the three remaining founders at Charleston School of Law have made poor decisions that resulted in financial instability for the school. These two founders decided that the best option for CSOL would be to sell the school to a Florida based company called Infilaw. This company owns three other law schools, and has a reputation of being a diploma mill. Infilaw is required to have license approval from the Commission on Higher Education to purchase the school, and at the beginning of June a decision was supposed to be made regarding this license. However, the day before the vote, Infilaw suspended their license application. Also, this saga with CSOL and Infilaw has been going on since July 2013.

This is the summed up version, of course. Due to this information, I will not be attending law school this fall. As an accepted student, it has been a completely agonizing journey. I have worked extremely hard, and to have this happen is just heartbreaking.

The future of Charleston Law remains unknown, and I do not feel any peace about enrolling at this establishment. I don't doubt that Infilaw is capable of running a successful law school, however with such minimal community support of this transaction, and the disgusting behavior of the two founders, I just can't board a sinking ship in good conscience. I've spent more time than I care to share playing out different scenarios, questioning my future, being angry, crying tears of frustration, and just being confused about this situation.

Why in the world would I make it this far in the law school process to stop now?

And what the frick just happened

I believe with my whole heart that everything happens for a reason. It's cliche, but true. God knew that this was going to happen. He knew that I'd encounter this situation. And while I seemed to forget this for a while, I'm hanging on to this truth now. He hasn't abandoned me.

So what is my next step?

I could have tried to enroll at a different school that I was accepted at or pursued a wait list, but since my family just moved back to Charleston, that option wasn't any good. I know that I am called to be an attorney, so I can't quit trying now just because this curve ball has come my way.

After numerous conversations with Keith, we have decided that I will retake the LSAT in September. My score from the February test was disappointing, and this time I will have 3.5 months to study and will be applying at the beginning of the admission cycle. I'd be lying if I said that I was happy about this decision, but it's mandatory if I want to get accepted next year at a better law school, and hopefully with a scholarship.

It's a bit surreal to me that this has happened, but I'm trusting that God has this under control. I mean, doesn't He always?

Accepted

Where do I even begin? My last post was written back in February and recapped my experience with the LSAT. Fast forward to May and I've received my LSAT score, applied to law schools, and have heard back from all but one law school. I am beyond excited to share that I've been accepted!!!! I applied to 9 schools, and was accepted at 4, waitlisted at 2, rejected at 2, and have yet to hear back from one.

Y'all. I didn't even think I'd get in! My whole life I never thought that I was good enough or smart enough...or really just enough. The enemy has tried and succeed in allowing me to doubt myself and had me believing that I could never accomplish something like this. But my God is greater than that. He has used people and stories to direct me towards this calling, and I am so incredibly thankful for this opportunity.

I have to be honest though. I still have days of doubt. Days when fear creeps in and I being to question everything. Can I actually do this? How will I manage motherhood and law school? What the heck am I thinking starting law school? Those days are awful and dark, but they always come to an end. And after those days, I always have more confirmation and peace that I am doing exactly what I am called to do. God is going to work out the details, and I'm going to continue being passionate about fighting injustices.

If you are at a crossroads right now,  whether big or small, I'd like to encourage you to dream big. Don't choose a path because it's easier, or because it's the comfortable choice. Don't avoid a goal because you believe that you could never accomplish it. My favorite movie and one of my all time favorite quotes comes from Jimmy Dougan (Tom Hanks). "It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."

Law school is definitely going to be hard, but I accept the challenge. I'm excited for this new chapter, and am just beyond proud of myself for never, ever giving up.

The First Step

Well, I finally did it. On Saturday, February 8th I tackled the LSAT!

It was a beast of a test and definitely lived up to the hype. I arrived at Charlotte School of Law at 8:00AM on a cloudy and cold morning, and poured everything I had into the insane questions. I'm not allowed to say much about the test itself (LSAC rules), but it lasted until 1:00PM. From what I've read online and heard from other test takers, we all agree that this test was incredibly difficult. I'm praying for a lenient curve, and hoping that I scored well enough to solidify my acceptance into law school.

Back in 2010 when the dream of law school first entered my mind, I wanted to pull an Elle Woods and score a 179. (180 is a perfect score... and FYI -- that's pretty freaking rare!) At this point, I just need to get in! I am 100% certain that becoming an attorney is my calling and no longer need to score that high to prove to myself that I'm good enough to follow my dreams.

I prepared for this test with Blueprint Prep's online movie. I highly recommend them, and know that if I would have had more time my score would have probably increased even more than it did. (It increased 10 points in ONE month!) While I decided to take this test back in October 2013, I had only begun studying at the beginning of January. Having two littles under the age of two made studying pretty difficult, and I would often feel guilty for spending so much time with my nose in a book. But it was only for a month, so I did it. And while I  wish I would have had more time, I feel like my preparation was sufficient. As much as the LSAT stressed me out, I think I'm going to actually miss studying. Hahaha.

After taking a 3 hour nap. The LSAT kicked my butt!

I want to say thanks to everyone who said a prayer for me. And thanks to my amazing husband for all of his love and support. (I love you, mais!) I was super nervous in the days leading up to the LSAT, but on test day I was strangely calm. I felt His presence just like I did during my natural births, and I know that no matter what happens, His Will will be done.

I've literally played this song 100 times this week and really meditated on the lyrics. God is truly amazing.

Back in a Jiffy

Well, I've gone missing again. The holidays have come and gone and we are halfway through January 2014. My good intentions to update My Dolce Vita remained just that -- intentions. Life is busy, as usual. However, for the next month I have not a moment to spare because I. am. studying. for. the. LSAT.

On February 8th, I am finally going to take the first step to pursuing my calling...and I'm applying to law school! There's so much I want to say, but now isn't the time. I've got to get back to studying and taking care of my babies. After the test, I'll be pouring my heart into this blog and playing catch-up. I love looking back at older posts and reading how I felt during different moments in this beautiful life. So many ups and downs happened during 2013, and I plan on documenting them all. Better late than never, right?

Until then, if you could say a little prayer for me I would greatly appreciate it!

The New and Improved 30 Before 30

After spending a good bit of time thinking about what I want to get out of my 30 Before 30 list, I am ready to make a few final changes. The whole point in creating this list was to make turning 30 years old less daunting, while also accomplishing things that I've always wanted to do. I previously mentioned that a change in perspective (due to becoming a mother) has made me question The List.

I've been asking myself if certain things must be accomplished before I turn 30 years old, how will these items impact my family, and am I being selfish in wanting these things. To answer, yes, I need to make some adjustments to items that aren't kid friendly. Yes, a couple of items fall under the "life list" instead of the Before 30 list. And the selfish part? I do feel a little guilty for still wanting to accomplish these things, but I've realized that they are necessary in order to prevent the loss of myself. My world revolves around Gavin (as it should), but it's okay to have some "me time", too.

The items I've decided that need to be replaced are:

11. Visit the Grand Canyon
16. Visit at least one sponsor child
17. Spend the day with beluga whales
26. Visit at least 5 museums
30. Get accepted to law school

Now, let me explain...

#11 - Visit the Grand Canyon. This is something that I definitely want to see in my lifetime, but I also want Gavin to be able to see it and remember seeing it. This needs to be a family trip when Gav is old enough to appreciate the sights, and this will not be before I turn 30 as Gav will only be 3 years old.

#16 - Visit at least one sponsor child. Currently, Keith and I sponsor 4 children through Compassion. Wilkemberg lives in Brazil, Luz in Columbia, Michael in Bangladesh, and Ester in Tanzania. I adore these children with all of my heart and want to meet each of them. However, I called Compassion to inquire about bringing Gavin with us and they told me he needs to be at least 12 years old. He's not even a year old yet. I can't imagine traveling out of the USA for weeks at a time without Gavin, so I'm removing this from the list. If something changes and I am able to meet my sweet sponsor kids soon, then fantastic. It just won't be on the 30 Before 30 list.

#17 - Spend the day with beluga whales. This would be really cool to do one day, but I'm going to remove it from the list as it isn't something that I consider a worthwhile need-to-do-before-30 item. So off it goes.

#26 - Visit at least 5 museums. I love museums and want to visit as many as possible in my lifetime, but having to commit to visiting 5 with an infant and eventually a toddler will be quite complicated (and basically asking for chaos). So, instead of dreading #26, I've decided to remove it.

#30 - Get accepted to law school. This is one that needs more than a few lines of explaining, but for now I'll just say that my new perspective has made me question the timing of law school right now for my family. In June I attempted to study for the LSAT, but I just didn't have the time. And if I don't have the time for the LSAT, I won't have the time for law school. This decision is very important to me, and I'll be writing later with more of my thoughts.

So, those are the items that are being removed. I'm happy that some are going and a bit sad about the others. But, it's for the best and I'm excited about the 5 that I'm adding.

The new #11 - Take an aerial skills class. This new item is a fun one and not extremely time consuming, so it's perfect for my schedule. I've always wanted to take a trapeze class (that's on the life list), but I think that this will be a nice alternative on my 30 Before 30. I can take this class here in Charleston and I'm excited to learn how to be an aerial acrobat. :)

The new #16 -Have breakfast at Tiffany's. Oh, Audrey. Is there anyone who exudes grace and poise like she does? Doubtful. Breakfast at Tiffany's is one of my favorite Audrey movies (right behind Roman Holiday and Sabrina) and I would love to spend a morning strolling NYC with my two favorite guys and have breakfast Tiffany's.

The new #17 - Start our adoption paperwork. This new item is truly the most dear to my heart. Keith and I have always had the desire to expand our family by having children and also adopting children, and I am anxiously waiting the moment that we begin the adoption process. To me, this isn't just an item on my 30 Before 30...this is the chance to change a child's life, and for our life to be changed in return. To love them and protect them and teach them about God. My greatest accomplishment in this life has been becoming a mother, and I can't wait to expand our brood. We desire to adopt internationally and know the process is a long one, so Keith and I have both agreed to begin the process before January 2016. AH! :D

The new #26 - Get published (even if it's self-published). If you guys only knew all of the ideas I have roaming around in this head of mine. I am itching to write my first novel, but I just have to get over the fear that it won't be good enough, and more importantly, that it's already been done. I've never particularly dreamed of having a book published, but if what I write does get publish then I would be thrilled. Mostly though, I'm writing for me, because I have to get it out!

The new #30 - Further my education. Instead of focusing on getting accepted to law school, I'd like to weigh my options and see what is best for my family. Do I still feel called to fight injustices? Absolutely! I have already been provisionally accepted to a local Criminal Justice Graduate Program (YAY!) and could begin taking courses online and on-campus as soon as January 2013. I will be meeting with an academic advisor soon and will make a decision shortly after. All I know is that it's been a long, hard road for me to earn my bachelor's, and now that I'm almost there, I don't want to stop.

The New 30 Before 30 List

1. Ride in a hot air balloon
2. Fly a plane
3. Learn to speak Italian
4. Go sailing/learn to sail
5. Graduate from college
6. Go to Italy!!!
7. Pay off debt (excluding student loans)
8. Run a marathon
9. Read the whole Bible
10. Go on a mission trip
11. Take an aerial skills class
12. Meet my weight loss goal
13. Learn to play the piano
14. Go skydiving
15. Learn to play tennis
16. Have breakfast at Tiffany's
17. Start our adoption paperwork

18. Take a dance class

20. Go snowboarding or skiing
21. Go to a Hillsong concert
22. Go horseback riding
23. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
24. Attend a Yankee game in NYC
25. Volunteer regularly at a nursing home
26. Get published (even if it's self-published)
27. Go on a cruise
28. Learn how to shoot a gun properly
29. Do an anonymous pay it forward
30. Further my education

There you have it -- my new complete, final 30 Before 30 List! Do you have a bucket list? If so, please send me your link! I'd love to follow your journey.

Miscellany on a Rainy Monday

Good morning, readers! I sincerely hope that you guys are doing well. :) Life over here is a bit hectic, but I am adoring this season that my family and I are currently in. As you guys know, time goes by way too fast, and nothing proves this more than my sweet little boy. This week he will be 4 months old and I just can't believe it. He is pure joy. :) I'll be writing his 4 month update soon (hopefully!) but until then I wanted to share a few things:

~ Gavin is officially a roller! :) On Friday, June 22nd Gavin rolled over all by himself, and hasn't stopped since! Whether he's getting his diaper changed or drinking a bottle, this kid is trying to flip over. Lol it's the cutest thing I've seen so far. He's even doing a little army crawl and I know he'll be crawling before we know it. AH! Oh time, please slow down just a little.

Gav right after his first roll. :D

~ Last week, Gavin and I joined our sweet friends Melissa and Ivey (Ive's also my sis-in-law) downtown for lunch and a stroll at Battery Park. It was a beautiful day and we had such a great time. With each trip downtown I am falling more and more in love with Charleston. :)

View from our table at Fleet Landing

 Group shot!

:)

And here's a little miscellany...

* Last night, I watched Lady and the Tramp for the first time. Not sure how I missed this one when I was a kid, but I'm glad I've finally seen it. What a sweet little movie! I can't wait (well, I can but you know what I mean) until Gav is old enough to watch movies with us. I'm anxious to see his reaction to movies that Keith and I love.

* This weekend, if the weather allows, I am finally going to learn how to play tennis! I've been wanting to learn how to play for years now and I can't wait to get out there. The hubs has already taught me the rules and point system, so all that's left is actually going out and playing. Yay! Here's to a good experience, a great workout, and scratching #15 off of The List.

*Speaking of The List, I've been doing a lot of thinking and I have finally decided on what's get kicked off and what new items I'll be adding. More on that later...

* And finally, I am very excited to share that the time has come -- I am studying for the October LSAT!!! I've mentioned numerous times before about my intentions on studying, but I've finally begun! I'm enrolled in Blueprint's LSAT prep course and I am loving it. Seriously. I never thought I'd enjoy studying for this beast of a test, but I do! Better yet, I am dramatically improving and feel confident in my ability to rock this test. And I've only completed the first lesson. :) I'm really looking forward to the rest of my lessons and am anxiously waiting for Test Day (103 days from now, but who's counting?).

It's a Crazy, Wonderful Life

Lots has happened since the last time I've posted on my blog. So much so, that I'm afraid I'll need to sum everything up in order to avoid any further blogging procrastination. I hate that I haven't been able to write much, but the most amazing little boy has been keeping me busy. :) And I simply adore spending my time this way.

Tons of this going on. I love, love, love him!

Alright, here we go with these updates...

* For starters, we've moved! We're now back in South Carolina and living in Summerville (which is about 30 minutes from downtown Charleston). The move happened this past weekend and was very exhausting. Since the house that we own is being rented, we've settled into a lovely apartment. It's a very nice, peaceful community and I have a feeling we're going to love it here.

In the past, I've been pretty vocal about my distaste for Charleston, but I'm feeling different this time around. I realize that I never really gave it a chance. Now that we're back I am vowing to become a tourist and truly experience the Lowcountry. I want to explore this charming city and immerse myself in the culture, history and all that Charleston has to offer. Let the adventures begin! I am so excited!

* Come June 4th, I will be heading back to work part-time at the disaster preparedness company that I previously worked at in Charleston. They have graciously offered me my old job back and are allowing me to go back on a part-time basis until I'm ready to go full-time. I'll be working 9-5 Monday thru Wednesday and am really excited to be going back to work. However, I am also extremely sad when I think about leaving my sweet boy. :( I currently have separation anxiety when I leave him to take a shower, and I have no idea how I'm going to manage leaving him for work. BUT, I think it's going to be great for our family and for me to work part-time.

* Last week was Keith's first week solo at his new job and he absolutely crushed it! He met the quota that his company set for his first month in the first week! My husband is severely blessed with his ability to sale and I am SO proud of him! :)

Gavin and I actually joined Keith on his first week of travel and during our stay in Wilmington, NC I found the location of One Tree Hill's river court! The bad news is that since OTH is over, the court has been demolished. :( The only thing left is a patch of dirt, but it was still pretty cool to be at this spot. Wilmington is gorgeous and Keith, Gav, and I will be heading back for a mini vacation.

* I previously mentioned that I may have finished the Spring semester with two A's...and I did!!! (Well, an A and an A-, but hey, that's two A's!) I have three classes left until I graduate with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and I am beyond thrilled. It's been a long road (6 years!) and I am finally finishing my undergraduate studies. Pending an Academic Petition to substitute one of my required classes and an Independent Study request for my CRJU Senior Research class, I will potentially be taking all three classes this fall and then THAT'S IT! :D Come May 2013, I'll make my way to Virginia Beach and walk across that glorious stage! Thank you God!

* A few days after Gavin was born, I found out that I was awarded a 50% scholarship to an amazing LSAT Prep Course -- Blueprint! Keith and I could not pass up the deal and we purchased the course for me to begin studying for this beast of a test. I will be taking the October administration of the test here in Charleston and will begin studying May 1st. This gives me plenty of time, but with a newborn and my hectic schedule I'm definitely going to need the extra time! I am very anxious about this test and can't wait until this step of the law school admission process is over.

Whew I think that's the just of everything. I hope you guys are doing awesome! Hopefully I'll be back sooner than later. :)

Just Another Miscellany Monday

~ Words cannot describe how happy I am that last week is over. It. Was. Crazy!!!! I'm ecstatic to report that I was able to get all of my schoolwork (a few discussion posts, 5 tests and a lab) completed and am now up to date on everything. Thank you God! Life is still busy, but the weight of being behind on everything is off of my shoulders...which of course means back to blogging. Yay! :)

~ Had I know that LSAC was going to email me the results of my fee waiver appeal, I wouldn't have stalked the mess out of my account. Unfortunately, my appeal was denied and I won't be getting any fee waivers. :( While it stinks, it's not the end of the world. Keith and I are in a pretty new, unique financial situation, and I can understand why they would deny me the waiver. Thankfully, it seems like things are looking up for us and we'll be a-okay paying for LSAT tidbits. Bring it on!!!

I know I haven't destroyed the LSAT (yet), but this was just too cute not to post.

~ Okay, does anyone watch The Mentalist? Keith and I have been catching up on older episodes and we are completely hooked. It is so cleverly written and we just love Patrick Jane! We've just seen the season 3 finale and cannot find season 4 (the current season) online anywhere...except the Canada iTunes store! Lol we've tried to purchase the first episode, but low and behold, we're not in Canada and the transaction won't go through. Does anyone know where we can find these episodes?

~ Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars recently released a song called "Safe and Sound" that will be on The Hunger Games soundtrack. It is absolutely beautiful, and in my opinion, the best that Taylor has sounded. But, there's a singer by the name of Savannah Berry who recently covered the song, and dear goodness she will take your breath away. This little girl is amazing and I can't wait to see her career take off.

Happy Monday!

Refreshed on a Rainy Monday

~ I am beyond thrilled to report that last week's sickness is gone! I'm pretty sure it was just our sinuses, but with me being pregnant and Keith being...well, being male (you know how men get when they're sick!) it was a rough week. But, that week is gone and we are back to normal. YAY!

~ For the past few days it has been pretty rainy in Atlanta. Our maternity session on Saturday was pushed back to Wednesday...but it looks like it may rain then, too! I am praying for sunshine and also for any water retention to hold off until after these pictures are taken. :) So far, so good...but I am 8.5 months pregnant and who knows when that hits. I am so excited about this session because a) we're taking our photos in Piedmont Park and b) our photographer is awesome. This is a picture from her last session at the park and I love it! :)

  via

~ Living in Atlanta without any family and friends can get rough, but thankful we have been blessed by visits over the past week from some very special people! Yesterday, our dear friends Chad and Melissa flew into Atlanta for the day and we had such a good time. It was a very relaxing day and we enjoyed their company so much! Then, two weekends ago we headed to the mountains with one of my oldest friends Kim, her husband and sweet baby girl. We went to Ellijay, GA and it was only an hour drive from our home in Atlanta. The trip was very relaxing and it was nice to get away from the real world and hang out in the North Georgia Mountains with these sweet people.

Our lovely friends!

My little family!

~ Last week, I applied for a fee waiver from the Law School Admission Council. (I am preparing to take the June LSAT, or if need be October) My request was initially denied, but I've appealed the decision and sent in supporting documents and an essay on why I think I should be eligible. I've only been waiting a few days, but I have been stalking the goodness out of my LSAC account. I know that it takes at least two weeks for a decision, but I just can't help myself! I can only imagine how crazy I'm going to be on LSAT score release day... :)

Happy Monday, Readers!

2011's 30 Before 30 Update

At the beginning of the year, I embarked on a journey to accomplish 30 things before I turn 30 years old. I created this list on my 25th birthday, and then revised it mid-year. With 2011 coming to an end, I wanted to talk about what I accomplished, what I'm working on, and what the "tentative" plan is for 2012. (Although, sometimes I don't know why I bother making plans when I know all too well that things will definitely may change)

First up: Accomplishments/Attempts

I will sadly say that this is all that I've accomplished in 2011. Sailing was such a fun experience and I am so happy that we were able to do this. Keith and I did attempt to scratch #2 (fly a plane) off in January, but thanks to the windy weather we were forced to reschedule.

Then there was that whole New York City trip that was planned for September that would have knocked off #23 (walk the Brooklyn Bridge) and #24 (attend a Yankee game in NYC), but that trip was postponed. :(

I did have the best of intentions of taking 4 items off this year, but as it turns out that didn't happen. Instead of pouting about it, I am hopeful that 2012 will be different. Here's my little plan as of now.

2012 Plan

#9 - Read the whole Bible. I've already started my reading plan and hope to finish by the end of November 2012. I am currently working my way through a Beth Moore Bible Study, and want to do more next year. If anything these studies should only enrich my growth during this time. :)

#10 - Go on a mission trip. As I may have mentioned in yesterday's post, I will be going to the Philippines! I'll spill the details as I find them out. :))))

#2 - Fly a plane. Keith and I will once again attempt to fly a plane on my birthday, January 7th. I will be 31 weeks pregnant, but I've already received approval from my doctor and the flight company! I am SO excited about this and can't wait to finally get up in the air! (I feel like singing "Anything you can do I do betterrrr...in heels....and pregnant!!! Bahahah, joking of course)

#12 - Meet my weight loss goal. Before becoming pregnant, I was that girl who had a good 5-10 pounds to lose before being "happy" with myself. (Remember my Weekly Health Updates?) Once Gavin is here I will have much more to lose, and I am claiming that I will accomplish this in 2012. With a little luck and a lot of discipline, I am confident that I will reach this goal. This past summer Keith and I purchased the Insanity workout, and that is what I'm going to do.

#5 - Graduate from college. The original date was May 2012, but due to a few class not being available until the fall (and Gavin arriving smack dab in the middle of the semester) I am going part-time in the spring and will finish in December 2012. BUT, I won't be attending commencement until May 2013, so this one might not be "technically" scratched off until I walk across that stage in 2013. Not sure how I feel about scratching this off before I wear that cap and gown...we shall see.

# 17 - Spend the day with Beluga Whales. This attraction is only available at the Atlanta Aquarium, and since I don't know how long we'll be living in ATL I figure I need to knock this one out during 2012.

#30 - Get accepted to law school. That's right -- I am going to be taking the LSAT in June and then applying to school at the end of the year. A few of the schools I'm interested in have rolling admissions, so I anticipate hearing back from them by the end of 2012. Holy. moly. AH!

So, that's the plan! Hopefully I will be much more successful in 2012 than I was in 2011 in completing these tasks. I know that I will have a newborn/infant in tow for most of the year, and these 7 things will definitely make life a bit more interesting. :)

Any list makers out there? Any x before x-ers? How are you guys doing in accomplishing your goals? I'd love to hear about it!

Class of 2012

 via

Two semesters. 10 classes. 31 scheduled hours.

That's how much is left for me to complete of my undergraduate studies. I mentioned earlier in the week that I wasn't sure if I should take my last year off and pick back up after the baby is born, or if I should jump in and finish this journey that began in 2007. (Yes, that's right folks. I'm on the 6 year plan) While each choice has its pros and cons, I think I know which way I am heading.

After talking to many people (including a fellow classmate who is currently pregnant) I have decided to finish my last year of school!!! YAYYYY!!!! In May of 2012, I will be able to scratch #5 (graduate from college) off of my 30 Before 30 List!

via  (How cool is this picture??)

Many things factored into making this decision, with the most obvious being if I could realistically complete these last two semesters with a) struggling with potential prego illness and b) my due date being right in the middle of my final semester. So many people have given me great advice, and I feel that this is the right choice. I would much rather find a way to finish my last couple of classes with a newborn than spend the first year of my child's life consumed with writing papers and studying.

So, I'm registered and ready to go! I'll be taking Research Methods, Data Analysis, Biology 102 (yuck!), Homeland Security and Theories of Criminal Justice. While this is my largest course load to date (hence the 6 year plan) I do have the advantage of taking all of my classes online. I am a distant learning student at Regent University, but even though I don't have to physically attend class, my schedule is very demanding and requires tons of self discipline. The semester begins August 22nd and I can't wait to tackle these classes. I'm am praying for the strength both physically and mentally to complete these classes with fantastic grades and to enjoy myself while I'm at it.

While we're on this subject, I should probably confess that lately I have been thinking about law school.  A lot.

 via

Call me crazy, but I still feel like I am supposed to do this. I've already planned on taking some time off in between undergrad and law school, so I guess we'll see what happens now that our family is expanding.  This is another reason why I want undergrad finished. If I do decided to tackle law school within the next few years, I will have ample time to study for the LSAT and figure things out.

Last year I wrote about wanting to become a mother and a lawyer and maybe, just maybe this little dream of mine will come true. (Lord, thank you for placing these desires in my heart. Please help me stay focused on you so that your will, not mine, will be done.)

Life & Law School

 via

Not too long ago, my husband and I were discussing our future and where we thought law school would take us. This conversation slowly turned into a little debate about the pros and cons of attending law school next year. How much money do we think we'll end up spending? What about time...will I have time to do anything else but study? When are we supposed to have babies? Everything was moving along fine, until Keith asked me this:

In order to do what you feel called to do, do you have to be a lawyer?

I sat in silence for a few moments and really thought about his question. My response?

Well, I don't know. I think I'd be happy in a courtroom fighting for injustice...but then again if I ended up running an orphanage somewhere or working directly with human trafficking victims...well I think I'd be okay, too.

So here we are, about a week after that little debate, and a decision has been made. I am not going directly to law school after undergrad. I still feel in my heart that this is what I'm supposed to do, but I also feel like if this was 100% right now, then there would be no confusion. As much as I'd like to take the LSAT this summer and apply to my top 10 law schools, I am just going to have to wait. I am going to have to trust God.

Please know that my husband fully supports my desire to become a lawyer, and that in no way was he trying to be discouraging. The truth of that matter is that law school is a HUGE investment with both time and money. (Lots and lots of money) Additionally, the job market for lawyers has significantly decreased, and yet more and more people are applying to law school.  While these reasons are significant, they do not trump my main reason for waiting.

On the bright side, not going to law school doesn't mean sitting around and wasting time. It means that I can spend LSAT study time volunteering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation again.

Volunteering as a Wish Granter in '08...what an amazing, rewarding experience. :)

It means that we will be able to travel way more over the next five years. (Post on this coming soon!) It also means that the road to parenthood may just come sooner than later. (I believe you can have a child AND go to law school/be a lawyer, I just don't know how I personally would handle giving 100% to both at this age.)

So while this decision is bittersweet, I am very hopeful. God has been challenging me lately with trusting Him, and I think that this is just one more thing I'm going to have to hand over. He is the one ultimately steering my car on the path of life, and if this is not the right time for law school, then so be it. :)

Disturbing News

Last night I read an article that made my heart hurt greatly. And while I understand that the media can twist the facts, there is much truth to what I read. Please know that I never intentionally want to be a Debbie Downer, but this is where my passion lies, and this not a "rainbows and sunshine" kind of post.

The article I read was about a 20/20 episode that focused on the Peace Corps, and featured a young woman named Kate Puzey. Kate was a volunteer serving in West Africa where she taught English at a local school.

Upon being informed that a fellow teacher and Peace Corps volunteer was sexually assaulting students, she sent an email to the local Peace Corps office notifying them of his actions. She requested that her identity remain anonymous so that she would stay protected.

Not long after, Kate was found murdered.

Local police held a suspect in custody -- the man Kate emailed the Peace Corps office about. This man was recently terminated from his job at the school as a direct result of Kate's email. The police and her family believe that her murder was absolutely linked to the breach of confidentiality by the Peace Corps. This beautiful girl was murder in March of 2009 and almost two years later the Peace Corps has yet to come forth with any responsibility or information for the family.

The 20/20 episode went on to tell the story of the women who have come away with their lives, but who have been raped while serving in the Peace Corps. While it was disturbing to listen to their stories, what was even more disturbing was that the Peace Corps practically discarded these women. They encouraged false stories to cover up the rapes, and also did nothing to help these women recover offered only a few counseling sessions to help the women cope. To make matters worse, the girls were told that they must have done something wrong to have been raped.

The only word that comes to mind when I think of the way the Peace Corps has handled these situations is pathetic. I highly doubt that this is what President Kennedy envisioned when he created the Peace Corps. I am well aware that we live in a fallen world and things like rape and murder happen, but it is the responsibility of the Peace Corps to protect their volunteers instead of failing those who have been abused.

I am not writing this post to point fingers and scream judgment. I know that the Peace Corps has done amazing things in this world, and I believe that a few bad apples shouldn't ruin the whole barrel. This 20/20 program focused on the murder of Kate and the rapes/cover ups of other volunteers. I'm sure that they could have easily produced a show that highlighted all of the wonderful things the Peace Corps has done. I don't know all of the facts, and I'm sure 20/20 does not know all of the facts. However, certain things remain true:

Kate Puzey was murdered.

Volunteers have been raped, and feel betrayed.

I believe that the 20/20 story has shed a vast amount of light on what is going on within the walls of the Peace Corps, and I can only hope that the government will step up and make things right with those who are victims, and protect those currently serving.

*****

It is stories like these that push me to go further when I feel like quitting. It's this type of injustice that boils my blood and drives me to continue on this path that I have been called to. God willing, I will graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice in May 2012, and will enroll in law school in August 2012. The day where I can stop dreaming of helping and start fighting for what I believe is right will be a powerful day, indeed.

A 2011 Miscellany Monday

* Yesterday, Keith and I surprised my sister with a new toddler bed for Baby Joe. It was a pain in the neck to put together thanks to the rods not lining up, but one look at Joseph's face made it completely worth it.

Think he likes it?? :)

* Last week Keith and I were finally able to watch Charlie St. Cloud. I had high hopes for this movie, and it did not disappoint! One of my favorite parts was the sailing aspect. This movie was filmed in different parts of Canada, and I am completely in love!

* I previously mentioned a road trip that I would love to take with Keith for our one year anniversary. Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that this trip will not take place. The reason for this canceled trip is an amazing job opportunity that was offered to me last week. The company I work for often sends sales reps to different shows and conventions throughout the year. Last year I went to New Orleans, and this year I'll be going to Colorado.

The Colorado trip is scheduled the week before our anniversary, and at the same time that our road trip was to take place. While I am bummed that we will not make it to Virginia Beach, DC, or NYC, and I am excited about this opportunity. Keith has been very supportive and encouraging, and I am so blessed to have a husband like mine. As a bonus, we'll still be able to sneak away for the weekend to celebrate our first year of marriage, and that is definitely good enough for me.

*My third to last semester of school starts today. I am excited to begin tackling these classes, and hope and pray that I kick the snot out of Statistics! (This is round two.) As the end of school nears I am both excited and nervous. The end of undergrad means the beginning of law school, and I cannot wait to see where this journey is going to take my family.

Happy Monday lovelies!

Twenty Eleven

via

Another year has come and gone, and once again I find myself asking "Where did the time go?" In the blink of an eye so many events took place, and it's really quite amazing once you slow down and reflect. 2010 was a year filled with many ups and downs, triumphs and failures. While I feel that I have grown in some ways, I have also taken a few steps back. At the end of 2009 I made a list of goals for 2010. I only accomplished a few of these goals.

However, this post is not meant to dwell on the past, but to focus on the upcoming year.

Goals for 2011

1. Becoming a better Christ follower. I want to dive into the Bible like never before this year, and be more like the wife in Proverbs 31. I want to actually get to know my Savior and have a stronger relationship with Him.

2. Meet my weight loss goal. I know that I say this every year, but this year has got to be different. I will be 25 years old in January, and I'm tired of always aspiring for my body to be better. It's "put up or shut up" time. I want to feel confident in my skin. I don't care what the scale says, I just want to be toned and healthy. When summertime rolls around I want to go frolic on the beach with Keith instead of dreading bathing suits.
3. Get our finances in order. In 2011 Keith and I plan on budgeting our money so that we can pay down our debt, build up our savings, and begin living the way God intended.

4. Score well on the LSAT/Get into law school. I begin hardcore studying for the LSAT next week (or as soon as my prep course materials arrive) and I am determine to put everything I have into this test. I am absolutely certain that becoming an attorney is the calling upon my life, and this test is the first step in getting there.

5. Start saving money for a trip to Italy! Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to go to Italy. I have a love for that country that I cannot explain, and it is time for me to stop dreaming and start doing. If we start saving a little at a time, Keith and I will make it to Italy the summer before I (hopefully) start law school!

So, there you have it! My five main things that I want to happen/change in 2011. I don't know why, but I have a funny feeling about 2011...and I think it's going to be a.mazing!

No Bueno

via

Well, the verdict is in...

I failed my Statistics class by TWO freaking points. Like I said before, I am definitely not "math minded" at all. But two points is just ridiculous. I could have guessed better on tests, spent time getting tutored, or asked my professor early on for additional assignments.

But I didn't.

And I failed.

I'll be leaving this class with a D+. Stats is required for my major, as well as a pre-req. for another required class, so I will have to take it again. I've adjusted my schedule for the Spring, and will be taking round two from January to March.

And you know what? I am going to ROCK this class. I am so upset that I not only failed, but by two points, that I have decided that I am going to make an A in round two. Yep, I WILL. This awful D+ will be replaced by whatever grade I earn the second time around. My GPA will not be harmed by this class, but the D+ will be on my transcript, and I will have to explain this on my law school applications. *sigh*

Having this happen is definitely the wake-up call I needed right before enrolling in my LSAT prep course. Now is not the time to start slacking in school. I am a junior, and I'm about to start tackling the ridiculous LSAT. Now is the time to get excited and focused and ready!

So thank you, Math 201, for knocking me down. I am looking forward to picking myself back up!

One Step Closer

Two weeks ago, Keith and I attended a law school forum in Atlanta, GA. (I know, I'm slack for not posting sooner. Sorryyyy.) We were only able to stay for a few hours, but we got to talk to most of my top school reps. I know that I shouldn't judge a school solely by my experience with the representative, but thanks to a few pleasant and not so pleasant experiences, it's going to be tough not to. I mean, the schools obviously trust their reps enough to have them as the face of their program. So while I will not making any drastic decisions due to a rep, it will definitely weigh in.

LSU Law
An LSU alumni told us we'd probably be divorced by the end of law school. Apparently, everyone in her class that was married has split. We left their table hand in hand, and very discouraged. Needless to say, LSU dropped to the lower have of my list.

U of Alabama Law
After the beating we received from LSU, we headed on over to Alabama's table, and at this point we were only looking for a second opinion about marriage and law school. The rep told us that she went through law school married, and it made their marriage stronger. Also, said they have a great spousal support system. We were thankful to speak with this kind lady, and felt better about marriage + law school.

Regent Law
Spoke with Director of Admissions and she was absolutely amazing! I'd receive a 15% discount for being a Regent graduate and she shared with us about her family's experience. One of the greatest things about Regent Law is that A) They are a Christian law school, and each class begins with prayer, and B) They just opened the Center for Global Justice, which focuses on human trafficking. This would be absolutely perfect since this is where my heart is at. We left Regent's table encouraged and excited about the possibility of attending.

U of Texas Law
Great rep! He spoke about campus life and about the law school community's strong bond. We also talked about Texas football and the athletic package offered to students. :o) He told me that I was more than my GPA and LSAT score, and to work on my personal statement. This was so encouraging! GO LONGHORNS! (i love texas) :o)

U of North Carolina Law
Rep was extremely intimidating, and I a was a bit scared to speak. Told the girl next to me that they have 3,000+ applicants for only 250 seats, so they can be as selective as they want. Ooookay.

Roger Williams
Reps were super friendly and answered all of my questions about their public interest programs. Talked about their location and how it has a colonial feel. They were very welcoming.

Chicago
Oh, Chicago. I did not know that this school was a prestigious Top 5 school. I also didn't know that this lady was related to the Wicked Witch of the West. Had I known these two facts I wouldn't have looked twice. Unfortunately, we stopped and talked to an awful woman. She was beyond rude, and even if I was a 4.0/180 student, I would NEVER give Chicago the time of day.

Brooklyn, Emory, Georgia State, and Charle
ston Law all had mucho people at their tables whenever we passed by, so we were unable to speak with a rep. We did pick up information for each school though. I am especially bummed about not speaking to Brooklyn's rep, but hopefully Keith and I can make it to NYC in March and I can have a one-on-one meeting. :o)

Overall we had a really great experience, and I am very happy that we attended. Choosing a law school will depend on quite a few factors. Obviously, the whole getting accepted factor is key. After that, the things Keith and I are looking at are location, a good church, job placement rate, average indebtedness, scholarships offered...just to name a few.

I am super excited about this journey and am so motivated to study hard so that I can rock the LSAT! High LSAT score = acceptance to law school/scholarship $$ = a law degree = living the calling on my life & kicking human traffickers' butts!!!!

Law school, here we come!
