empowered

Hello blog world! I have missed you dearly.

This past week I decided to distance myself from my blog. It's not that I don't love blogging, but I felt like it was gaining control over my time and pulling my focus away from other important things. While I did miss writing and reading all of your fantastic blogs, I spent more time reading my Bible, researching for Serenity, laying in my wonderful husband's arms, and spending time with my sister and nephew. It was great! I also took my first self defense class at the local police station. :o) For someone who is extremely passionate about women's self defense, this class rocked my world.

At the class, they taught us a bit of Krav Maga. I do not have a black belt, but I now know how to rip someone's hand off of my neck if they are choking me. I know how to roll someone off of me if they are on top of me choking me. (I really did this at the class! I flipped a 200 lb. man!) I know how to effectively hit someone with my hands, elbows, and legs. This class really empowered me and encouraged me to follow my dream of making Serenity a reality.

Today I read an article about five female students who stopped a man from stabbing a fellow student to death. One of the girls had just taken a self defense class and successfully seized the attacker's knife while the other girls held the attacker on the ground until the police arrived. This is the kind of story I have been desperately needing to read. These girls were not karate experts - one of them simply had taken a self defense class. Imagine if every female knew how to properly defend themselves? I bet those slimy criminals would think twice if more stories like this played out.

The other day I took one of those Facebook quizzes to help me figure out which mighty woman of the Bible I am most like. The quiz told me that I am most like Deborah. "You aren't afraid to speak your mind. You know what you want, and go for it. You are motivated, and you revel in personal victories. You are wise in many ways, and you know well, and trust the God you serve. You are courageous, and can look fear in the face. You are a victor." My first thought was "Wow, that's pretty cool, but who in the world is Deborah?" After looking through my Bible, I found out that she was the only female Judge in the Old Testament. Holy moly.

Since finding out about Deborah, I have been studying my Bible and the book of Judges. Isn't it amazing how God can use a silly Facebook quiz to open the door to something greater?

I'll be back to writing more regularly on my blog, but I want to apologize in advance if my posts are focused on self defense and things like that. I know that it's not everyone's interest, but it's definitely mine. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Talk to you soon.

I think it's great that you're trying to start this! Can I ask what got you interested in self defense? If that's a personal question, I totally understand! It's just that I come from a family of judokas (athletes who practice judo) and I've done a lot of work with orgs that work with domestic violence and sexual assault victims.

Thanks Christy! What really sparked my interest in self defense was watching a TV special on the murder of Melanie Goodwin. God really messed me up and planted the idea for Serenity. I'd love to talk to you sometime about your experience with the victims you've worked with. I don't have a solid plan for Serenity yet and was thinking about having recovery sessions for these types of victims.
